It’s Kentucky Derby day and it’s 80 degrees outside, so let’s make mint juleps! (Or margaritas, since it is also Cinco de Mayo—find more Mexican recipes here.)
Mint juleps are refreshing and boozy cocktails typically made with fresh mint, bourbon and simple syrup. My twist? I used maple syrup instead of simple syrup, which means that you don’t have to melt sugar into water.
To make these maple-sweetened mint juleps, just muddle up some mint, add a drizzle of maple syrup and a pour of bourbon, and top it off with lots of crushed ice. Bourbon and maple syrup are a flavor pairing made in heaven, and the maple syrup adds another layer of flavor.
Crushed ice is ideal because it melts into the drink more quickly, which is most welcome when you’re sipping bourbon on a hot day. Let’s cheers to the weekend!
